Spring Ahead

OK, we moved our clocks ahead by an hour this past Sunday, but I still haven’t caught up on that hour I lost from when I went to bed last Saturday night. How about you? I still cannot get to sleep before midnight or 1 a.m. How about you? And after my interview with Marci Shimoff – celebrated transformational leader, international speaker and #1 New York Times bestselling author, promoting her latest book, “Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out” – last week on our Smart Women Talk Radio Show, I know that I’m not “sleeping my way to happiness.”

She subscribes to the Ayurvedic wisdom (Ayurveda is the ancient medical tradition of India) that “an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours of sleep after midnight”. Marci suggests that if we are unhappy or just out of sorts, we should try going to bed before 10 (ideally by 9) three nights in a row, and then see how we feel. She states that every time she does that she finds a “whole new world out there by the third day!” She dubs this the “catching the 10 o’clock angel train” – recommending other to try it to recharge your batteries and bring back that energetic, joyful, rested person.

This is a warning for all of you out there that connect with me after 10 p.m. – either by phone, through Facebook, through emails or Tweets – I am going to do the three-day test starting tonight! I want my sleep back! I am no proud to say that I average five hours – no bragging here! Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states there is a strong correlation between the amount of restful sleep a person gets and your level of happiness.

What about you? Do you want to try this test, too? Let me know how it goes. Better yet, join the Smart Women’s Coaching Cafe and share with other members your thoughts, plus you’ll get to connect with Marci – she’s one of our latest Contributing Experts in the Mind, Body and Spirit Tea Room.

Now, I know change isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but we all go through changes and it’s usually after the change that we feel great about ourselves. As we enter springtime (and it IS coming – March 20th) let us be reminded that change is good, it’s a wonderful renewal. Embrace it, don’t fight it. I’m not holding on to that precious hour I lost Saturday night, I’m not going to brag about sleeping only five hours, and I’m not staying up past 10 p.m. starting NOW! So, right before I retire this evening, you’ll find me interviewing another one of our amazing Contributing Experts, Lou Bortone. He’s the online branding video guy a/k/a “LouTube”. Lou will be sharing how to brand your book with online video. Please join me (link) – and have a fun discussion before you catch your 10 o’clock angel train.

What a great idea! Getting to bed earlier would certainly help me, if I can learn to shut my brain off. Thanks for the links to the information about Ayurvedic Wisdom – definately something I’m going to look into.
