Save Your Flip-Flops for the Beach

There’s nothing I love better than a relaxing day at the pool or the beach, but I would never consider wearing a business suit to either one, would you?

So it came as a bit of a surprise to me when I saw the attire worn by close to half the women in attendance at a business conference and networking event I attended a few weeks ago. Skin-tight micro skirts and 3″ heels; lightweight, low-cut dresses down to the floor with flip-flops; shorts and t-shirts.

Yes, it’s hot outside; we want to be comfortable and stylish – and, it’s good personal policy to remember that you are always on stage, even when you are a spectator at a business conference.

People are watching, and they will make decisions in a nanosecond about working with you (or not) based on how you present yourself.

Be impeccable with your presence.

Here are a few tips to help you coordinate your summer business attire:

Buy light-colored suit separates; a lightweight blazer or summer cardigan can “business up” a summer dress or sleeveless dress shirt when you have to attend a meeting.

Dresses and skirts should fall close to your knees when you stand. Anything shorter is inappropriate.

Remember that it is unprofessional to show too much skin, so avoid sheer garments, unless you are wearing cover-up undergarments of the same color.

Avoid plunging necklines.

Wear dressy sandals or open-toed heels or flats. Flips-flops are never appropriate for a business setting – not even the designer brands.

A high-end brand worn inappropriately is less acceptable than a fit-you-well, classic piece from a thrift shop.

When in doubt, it is better to overdress than underdress.

Exciting things happen in spring, don’t you think? The equinox ushered in the season, you celebrated Easter or Passover, paid Uncle Sam or thanked him for the refund, and are giving your home that wash-away-winter Spring cleaning.

It’s also a good time to take a look at your business and your brand.

I tell the people in my public workshops that in a competitive marketplace, everything counts – your stance, your clothing, what you say, the way you say it, and the reputation you hold.

Just for Today: Make a list of the things in your business or brand that need a refresh or upgrade, and take one step towards making it happen.
